WASHINGTON, DC (December 7, 2018) – Rep. Juan Vargas (CA-51) released the following statement announcing the $20 million Better Utilizing Investment to Leverage Development (BUILD) Grant for the Imperial County Transportation Commission Project.

“Today is a great day for Imperial County. The $20 million BUILD Grant will significantly improve our existing infrastructure to accommodate the travel demands along our U.S.-Mexico border. When we invest in our infrastructure we are making long-term investments in our region.

“This grant will help the Imperial County Transportation Commission Project widen the bridge at our southern border by adding two commercial and two passenger vehicle northbound lanes. The project will also address the bicycle and pedestrian facilities at the border crossing.

“I am honored that the U.S. Department of Transportation has chosen to invest in our District and am looking forward to seeing the benefits of this vital project.”

Vargas represents California’s 51st Congressional District which includes the southern portion of San Diego County, all of Imperial County and California’s entire US/Mexico border.  Vargas was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2012 and is currently serving his third term in Congress.  He represented the 40th California State Senate District from 2010-2012, the 79th California State Assembly District from 2000 – 2006 and served on the San Diego City Council from 1993 – 2000.
