Rep. Vargas Releases Statement on NAD Bank Approved Infrastructure Project in Mexicali, Baja California

Imperial County, CA (May 29, 2020) – Today, Rep. Juan Vargas (CA-51) released the following statement after the NAD Bank’s Board, which includes government officials from both sides of the border, approved an infrastructure project in Mexicali, Baja California with a total investment of $6.8 million.

The NAD Bank’s Board also approved $200 million for its temporary COVID-19 Recovery Program in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

“I applaud the NAD Bank's Board approval of an infrastructure project that could help address transboundary flows in the New River and surrounding communities. These communities are facing environmental and public health challenges created by cross-border sewage spills. We know that there is a dire need for infrastructure improvements to Mexicali’s water collection system. I’m excited to see how those improvements will help mitigate uncontrolled wastewater from flowing into the New River and affected Imperial County communities.

“I’m also pleased that the NAD Bank’s board is prioritizing finances necessary for infrastructure improvement projects along our border. Not only will the COVID-19 Recovery Program support environmental projects that are in the best interest of public health, but additionally help the economy by creating more local jobs.

"I look forward to continuing to collaborate with my colleagues at the local, state, and federal levels to combat cross-border spills. Infrastructure project funding, from both sides of the border, is necessary to help mitigate cross-border sewage spills along the border."

Vargas represents California’s 51st Congressional District which includes the southern portion of San Diego County, all of Imperial County, and California’s entire U.S.-Mexico border. Vargas was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2012 and is currently serving his fourth term in Congress. He serves on the House Financial Services Committee and House Foreign Affairs Committee.
