Dear Friend,

As your Member of Congress, one of my top priorities is keeping you informed on what I’m doing in Washington D.C. and around the district.   In the last few months we’ve had a lot of legislative success. However, there is more work to be done.  It is imperative that the Senate acts quickly and passes a relief package with families and workers in mind. I will continue working relentlessly to ensure Americans’ health, safety, and economic security remain a top priority.

 This e-newsletter includes:

  • California’s 51st District Photo Contest

  • Updates on my Legislative Work in Washington D.C.

  • Information on How I can Help You

  • COVID-19 Updates and Resources and More

It is an honor to represent California’s 51st Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives.  Our diverse community is uniquely situated to serve as an example of hard work, understanding and compassion. I am happy to bring these values to our nation’s Capital.

Sincerely,

REP. JUAN VARGAS TO INTRODUCE BORDER WATER QUALITY RESTORATION AND PROTECTION ACT IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

I’m proud to be introducing the Border Water Quality Restoration and Protection Act of 2020, a companion bill to Senator Dianne Feinstein’s (D-CA) legislation introduced on July 29, 2020. The legislation will address pollution along the U.S.-Mexico border and help improve the water quality of the Tijuana River Valley, Salton Sea, and New River.

Specifically, the bill will designate the Environmental Protection Agency as the lead agency to coordinate all federal, state, and local agencies to plan and construct infrastructure projects to help combat pollution along the border.

Stay up to date with this and other bills I’m supporting at: vargas.house.gov/media-center

REP. VARGAS’ CALIFORNIA NEW RIVER RESTORATION ACT INCLUDED IN

MONUMENTAL INFRASTRUCTURE BILL

I’m very pleased that language from my bill, H.R. 358 California New River Restoration Act of 2020 was included as an amendment to the Invest in America Act.

The legislation will implement projects, plans, and initiatives for the restoration and protection of the New River in Imperial County.
Infrastructure improvement and conservation programs are imperative to protecting public health and environmental safety at the border. I will continue working in Congress to secure funding to combat harmful pollution impacting our communities. The Senate must act quickly and pass the Invest in America Act.

REPS. VARGAS AND RUIZ’S SALTON SEA RESTORATION LANGUAGE INCLUDED IN

WATER RESOURCES DEVELOPMENT ACT

I’m very pleased that the language I submitted, along with Rep. Ruiz (CA-36), was included in the Water Resources Development Act.

The legislation will help carry out water resource development projects and a study for the construction of a perimeter lake to restore the Salton Sea.

There is a dire need for critical restoration projects and studies to help protect the public from an environmental and health crisis at the Salton Sea. This is a big step forward.

I will continue working on legislation needed to facilitate water resource development projects in my district.  Improving the Salton Sea is of utmost importance to the region’s environmental conservation, economic development, and public health.

REP. VARGAS COSPONSORS HISTORICAL JUSTICE IN POLICING ACT OF 2020

TO END POLICE BRUTALITY

I am proud to have co-sponsored H.R.7120 Justice in Policing Act of 2020, led by the Congressional Black Caucus, which strives to end police brutality in the United States.

The act will establish new policing standards by banning chokeholds, ending no-knock warrants, and mandating law enforcement data collection, including body cameras and dashboard cameras. In addition, the transfer of military-grade equipment to state and local law enforcement will be limited under the act.

REP VARGAS INTRODUCES BILL TO MAKE ADDITIONAL MEDICAL SUPPLIES

TO COMBAT COVID-19 AVAILABLE

We are putting our heroes and frontline workers at risk without proper access to, and a higher level of production of necessary materials. The president must utilize the full extent of his authority by invoking the Defense Production Act and ensuring every possible resource is dedicated to preventing and combating COVID-19.

My legislation, H.R.6858 COVID-19 Emergency Medical Supplies Enhancement Act, which recently passed out of the House as part of the National Defense Authorization Act, allows the president to exercise authorities of the Defense Production Act (DPA) to expedite the production, acquisition, and distribution of goods and materials needed to prevent COVID-19.

Congressional Hispanic Caucus Rosary for Rep. John Lewis

May his lifelong fight for justice guide us as we continue working for a better tomorrow. You will be dearly missed, my friend.  As Rev. Grainger Browning Jr. of the Ebenezer AME Church said, “he crossed another bridge, not the Edmund Pettus Bridge that we pray that one day will be named the John Lewis Memorial Bridge, but the bridge from earth to glory."
