Rep. Vargas’ Statement on Supreme Court Blocking Termination of Title 42

WASHINGTON, D.C (December 27, 2022) — Congressmember Vargas released the following statement regarding the Supreme Court’s decision to delay the termination of Title 42, a Trump-era immigration policy that blocks migrants from seeking asylum in the United States:

“The conservative-controlled Supreme Court’s decision to block the end of Title 42 is outrageous,” said Rep. Vargas. “Over the last two and a half years, migrants have been cruelly expelled from our country under the guise of Title 42. It should have never been implemented in the first place, and it is long overdue to expire. Title 42 was never about public health—it was always about denying due process to asylum seekers fleeing persecution and extreme famine. Seeking asylum is legal in the United States.

“Immigration has been used as the scapegoat of partisan attacks for far too long. Delaying the end of Title 42 will only create more chaos and place further strain on our already dysfunctional immigration system. I urge the Biden Administration to continue fighting to restore humanity and justice to our broken immigration system. It is time to end this cruel Trump-era policy once and for all.”
