Rep. Juan Vargas Proudly Co-Sponsors the Dream and Promise Act

Washington, D.C. (March 12, 2019) – Today, Rep. Juan Vargas (CA-51) joined Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard (CA-40), Nydia Velazquez (NY-7), and Yvette Clarke (NY-9) as an original co-sponsor to introduce the Dream and Promise Act, H.R. 6.

“Dreamers, Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) recipients embody the very best of our American values. Today, Congress is taking the next step to help these hardworking individuals fully realize their American dream,” said Rep. Vargas. “For the last two years, they have had to suffer from the President’s attempts to block their applications, deny their rights, and deport them from this country. I am very proud to support the Dream and Promise Act. Like so many towns and cities across our nation, San Diego and Imperial Valley is home to thousands of DACA, TPS and DED recipients. They are our neighbors, students, friends, and colleagues – we have an obligation to create a pathway to citizenship for them.”

H.R. 6 would create a pathway to citizenship for eligible Dreamers and secure permanent residency for those with TPS or DED status. It would also repeal outdated policies that penalize states for extending rights of residency to undocumented individuals. Finally, this key piece of legislation would provide legal protections for DACA, TPS, and DED recipients to prevent deportations and ensure the rights and dignity of all those living under these designations.

Vargas represents California’s 51st Congressional District which includes the southern portion of San Diego County, all of Imperial County and California’s entire U.S.-Mexico border.  Vargas was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2012 and is currently serving his fourth term in Congress.  He serves on the House Financial Services Committee and House Foreign Affairs Committee.
