REP. JUAN VARGAS’ STATEMENT ON TRUMP'S ATTACKS ON POSTAL SERVICE AND TEMPORARY POLICY REVERSAL

Washington, D.C. (August 19, 2020) – Rep. Juan Vargas (CA-51) released the following statement in response to the Trump administration’s attempts to manipulate the elections and their temporary reversal of U.S. Postal Service policies under Postmaster General Louis DeJoy.

“Having a reliable, efficient, and fully-funded U.S. Postal Service has never been more important. Trump's actions are an attack on our democracy and a threat to the lives and livelihood of the American people.

“This is why I signed a letter, along with 90 Congressmembers, demanding that the USPS Board of Governors remove Postmaster General Louis DeJoy from his position immediately. The Postmaster General’s temporary policy reversal does not fix the damage he has already done.

“This week, I joined my San Diego Congressional Delegation colleagues and local leaders in demanding that Trump halt all attempts to discredit the Postal Service.  This pandemic is forcing Americans to rely on the Postal Service these upcoming elections. Making them choose between their health and the right to vote will distort the elections.

“I look forward to voting on the Delivering for America Act, which will provide $25 billion in support of the Postal Service. Congress must continue fighting to protect the Postal Service and our democracy from President Trump.”

Vargas represents California’s 51st Congressional District which includes the southern portion of San Diego County, all of Imperial County, and California’s entire U.S.-Mexico border. Vargas was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2012 and is currently serving his fourth term in Congress. He serves on the House Financial Services Committee and House Foreign Affairs Committee.
