Rep. Vargas Celebrates Black History Month
WASHINGTON, DC (February 4, 2014) – Rep. Juan Vargas (CA-51) joins millions of Americans in marking the annual celebration of February as Black History Month – a commemoration that has occurred in America since 1976.
“During Black History Month, let us celebrate the African Americans who made extraordinary sacrifices in the name of justice and equality, and honor the courageous people who fought for the passage of the Civil Rights Act,” said Rep. Vargas.
The theme of Black History Month this year is “Civil Rights in America,” focusing on the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. One year after the historic March on Washington, highlighted by Reverend Martin Luther King’s “I Have A Dream” speech, Congress passed this momentous and much-needed civil rights law. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 outlawed discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex or national origin, and made discrimination in all public facilities illegal.
“During this month, we celebrate the invaluable contributions African Americans have made to our nation’s history,” said Rep. Vargas. “We must continue to work for an America that fully lives up to its ideals and ensures that all Americans have the opportunity to pursue the American Dream.”
