Rep. Vargas Statement on the Trump Government Shutdown

Washington, D.C. (January 19, 2018)—Rep. Vargas released this statement after the Trump government shutdown:

“Republicans have shut down the government despite having control of the House, the Senate, and the White House. Congress has had to pass three short-term spending deals to keep the government open and give Republicans time to work on a bipartisan government funding agreement. It shouldn’t be difficult for Congress to fund the government, pass a permanent bipartisan solution to protect DREAMers, and fully fund the Children’s Health Insurance Program and Community Health Centers. However, the inability of Republicans to work in a bipartisan manner for the good of the American people is impeding this important work from getting done.

“Republicans should set their political games aside and get to work with Democrats to get things done for the American people.”

Vargas represents California’s 51st Congressional District which includes the southern portion of San Diego County, all of Imperial County and California’s entire U.S.-Mexico border.  Vargas was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2012 and is currently serving his third term in Congress.  He serves on the House Financial Services Committee.
