Rep. Juan Vargas Votes Against Cruel Republican Budget Plan

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Representative Juan Vargas (CA-52) voted against the House Republican Budget Plan, H.Con.Res. 14.

“The biggest winners in the House Republican budget are the billionaire donors and big corporations. This plan would rip away health care from millions and gut essential programs that families across the country rely on while handing $4.5 trillion in tax breaks to the ultra-wealthy,” said Rep. Juan Vargas. “It’s a betrayal. It’s wrong. Tonight, I voted no on this cruel proposal.”

The House Republican budget proposal threatens to slash:

  • $880 billion from Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act (ACA), putting coverage at risk for nearly 20 million people who rely on the ACA and more than 72 million people who count on Medicaid.
  • $230 billion from food assistance programs.

In California’s 52nd Congressional District:

  • 24,000 people who receive coverage under the ACA could see their average premium rise by up to $2,320 per year – a 111% increase.
  • Over 270,000 Medicaid recipients would be at risk of losing their health care, including over 100,000 children and 32,000 seniors.
  • 84,000 people’s SNAP benefits would be at risk.
