Rep. Vargas Statement on the Deportation of Guadalupe Garcia de Rayos

Washington, D.C. (February 9, 2017)—Congressman Juan Vargas (CA-51) released this statement following the deportation of Guadalupe Garcia de Rayos:

“The deportation of Guadalupe Garcia de Rayos is heartbreaking and alarming. After showing up to her regularly scheduled appointment with Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Ms. Rayos was not able to go back home with her children, instead, she was separated from her family and deported to Mexico.

This unfortunate situation appears to be a direct effect of the recent immigration policy changes made by the Trump Administration. Due to lack of clarity and lack of transparency coming from the Administration, it is unclear as to how the policy changes are being implemented across the country or how they will impact our community.

It is important, now more than ever, for individuals to stay informed and consult immigration lawyers or organizations to have an accurate and clear understanding of how changes to immigration policies will directly affect them and their loved ones. We must strive to keep families together, not tear them apart."

Vargas represents California’s 51st Congressional District which includes the southern portion of San Diego County, all of Imperial County and California’s entire US/Mexico border.  Vargas was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2012 and is currently serving his third term in Congress.  He serves on the House Financial Services Committee.
