Rep. Vargas Supports Peaceful Protests in Honor of George Floyd

San Diego, CA (June 2, 2020) – Today, Rep. Juan Vargas (CA-51) released the following statement expressing support of those peacefully marching in honor of George Floyd and many other Black individuals who have been killed.

“Black Lives Matter. Period. George Floyd, along with other victims, deserve to be with us today.  I see grieving and hurting among Americans in California's 51st District and across the country. I hear you and stand in solidarity. It is heartbreaking that we still live in a time when Americans are killed beause they are Black. We can't continue allowing Black folks to be killed because of the color of their skin. Our nation must be better than this. We must embrace our strengths and come together to rebuild this country based on the fact that we are all created equal.

"We don't need a so-called leader in the White House inciting violence or driving us apart, threatening to put down peaceful protests with military force.  Right now, we need a leader who can demonstrate empathy, morality, and fairness, and work toward holding individuals accountable for their actions. We need a leader who is fit to represent all people, regardless of their race or color."

Vargas represents California’s 51st Congressional District which includes the southern portion of San Diego County, all of Imperial County, and California’s entire U.S.-Mexico border. Vargas was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2012 and is currently serving his fourth term in Congress. He serves on the House Financial Services Committee and House Foreign Affairs Committee.
