Rep. Juan Vargas Votes NO on Big Ugly Bill

July 3, 2025

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Representative Juan Vargas (D-CA-52) voted against President Trump and Congressional Republicans’ ‘Big Ugly Bill’. This legislation was passed by the Republican majority along party lines using the reconciliation process. It’s estimated that over two million Californians will lose health care as a result of this bill.

Rep. Vargas’s statement on final House passage of the bill is below:

“The House just voted on budget reconciliation, a partisan bill that was passed by the Republican majority without a single Democratic vote. Trump and Republicans’ Big Ugly Bill is one of the worst pieces of legislation I've ever seen, and its impact will be nothing short of devastating.

This bill is a gross transfer of wealth from working families to billionaires. It guts health care for millions of children and families, strips food assistance from our neighbors, funnels huge amounts of funding to Trump’s mass deportation agenda, and takes from the most vulnerable – all to give tax cuts to the ultra-wealthy and big corporations. Even with all these disastrous cuts, the Big Ugly Bill still explodes the federal deficit by trillions of dollars.

With this vote, Republicans in Congress have inflicted an unbelievable amount of pain and suffering on millions of families across the country and made it clear that billionaires matter more than their constituents. It’s an absolute betrayal. Shame on them. This won’t be forgotten.”

According to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, the legislation would add over $3 trillion dollars to the federal deficit, while also cutting $1.1 trillion from Medicaid. 17 million people could lose their health care as a result of this legislation.
