Rep. Vargas Presses for Answers on Timeline for Reopening Friendship Park
WASHINGTON - U.S. Representative Juan Vargas (CA-52) called on the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for answers on the timeline for reopening Friendship Park, which has long served as a bi-national meeting spot for friends and family along the U.S.-Mexico border.
Last year, U.S. Customs and Border Protection announced plans to reopen Friendship Park and the Binational Friendship Garden once repairs were completed. However, construction has remained halted.
“Friendship Park, located on the San Diego-Tijuana border wall, has historically been a meeting spot for friends and family on both sides of the border. The park closed to the public in 2020 due to the global pandemic and subsequently to make way for construction of replacement fencing. I have been informed that Friendship Park remains closed due to an unexpected pause in construction,” wrote Rep. Juan Vargas. “I write to respectfully request an updated timeline of when construction of the replacement fence is anticipated to resume, when visitors may resume access to the park, and when volunteers can resume garden access.”
Rep. Vargas has repeatedly pushed for Friendship Park to be reopened to help families and friends reunite.
