Washington, D.C. (October 8, 2015) - Today, Congressman Juan Vargas (CA-51) introduced the Chicano Park Preservation Act (H.R. 3711). This bill instructs the Secretary of the Interior to conduct a thorough study of Chicano Park in order to evaluate its national significance and determine the feasibility of the park becoming a National Historic Landmark.

When Rep. Juan C. Vargas attends Pope Francis' address to Congress next week, it won't be his first time in the pontiff's presence.

The California Democrat arranged to meet briefly with the pope in August 2014 in Rome and a photo from their encounter serves as the background on Vargas' cell phone. The two men also share a deep bond: Vargas is a former member of the Society of Jesus, a Catholic order whose members include Francis.

Washington, D.C.- On September 24th, Pope Francis will be participating in a joint session with Congress in Washington, D.C. at 9:00 am ET. For this occasion, each congressional office has been given 50 tickets to distribute to constituents who are interested in witnessing the  historic visit.
